Pinan Shodan

Pinan katas were created in 1907
by Anko Itosu at the age of 77.

The Pinan katas (sometimes called Heian in mainland Japan)
were originally intended for high school students.

Pinan katas teach us Speed and Balance.
and a great many other things.

It is a belief by some, that Pinan katas were developed
from the Kusanku kata. They believed that Kusanku was
too difficult for younger students to learn and understand;
therefore, it was broken down into 5 separate kata to make
it easier to understand.
